Since 2015, Darwin has grown from a single Montessori environment into a Montessori and ICSE school, so that children in Chennai can learn with curiosity, confidence and care.

Darwin began with one belief: children learn best when they are happy, not pressured. So we brought the Montessori way and the ICSE curriculum together, in a school that knows every child well enough to let them grow at their own pace.
From one Montessori environment to a full ICSE school.
Darwin’s founder, Ms. Shantha Shankar, spent nearly a decade as a project manager before turning to education. Her search for the best approach to early childhood led her to Montessori, and to formal training as a Montessori educator at IMTC.
In 2015 she opened Darwin Montessori House of Children in Anna Nagar, where authentic Montessori schools were few: one prepared environment in a rented house.
The seats filled within months, and a second environment opened in 2017. Families soon asked if their children could continue at Darwin beyond the age of six. That trust shaped what came next: a full school.
Darwin is backed by Neverskip, a school technology company that has worked with more than 1,500 schools across India, which gives us a close view of what makes the strongest schools work.
With that backing, Darwin moved to its own campus in Kolathur, built through the pandemic and opened in 2021 with 60 children. Since then it has grown by one grade a year, a pace chosen deliberately so that quality always stays ahead of numbers.
